20 over? I call bullshit. Nice of him to give you a warning, though.

"Please , slow down." Awesome. Where were you?

Whew! You lucked out that time. You were very honest and pleasant with the cop. Good job.

What you don't see is the driver of the Corolla laughing his ass off at Takuro's expense.

If a car is slowly accelerating and you are approaching the speed limit, are you supposed to only pass at 40? I don't understand why you were pulled over unless you maintained going 60 like the officer claimed you were. Do they want you to pass and once you get past the car get into the lane and slam on the brakes? I don't understand. Also, do they have radar on the cars to measure the closing speed of oncoming traffic? How would he know how fast you were traveling? Just curious.

I don't think I touched 60. Plus my speedo is off, so MAYBE 55?

I was on some side road in Germantown, WI:

They can clock you as you approach them going the other direction.

But I think this cop was full of it, because 1) I don't think Takuro was going that fast, and 2) he said that the other car was going 40. I don't see how he could have clocked both of them at the same time unless they were going the same speed. This was probably more of a fishing expedition on the cop's part. If Takuro had truly been 20 over, he would have gotten a ticket. In some states, that's considered reckless driving.

I question the methods of that. Too many variables unless it was an instrument that was doing the clocking while taking into account of the officers speed at the instant of the measurement.

right, it seemed like just a assumption and no proof. "he was going kinda quick" will not hold up. I guess taking your time was good enough for him. And hey, we got a vid for OPPO :]

Now the question is, are they tieing into the ECU's speedometer or are they using something more reliable to take speed in a moving vehicle into account, or is the cop just doing that while he is driving and guestimating his speed? I get how the methods work, just not the efficacy of the method.

I got a warning for 30+ over.

I was very lucky and it was 4 AM and I'm pretty sure that the cop was expecting either a drunk, or a teenager, not a guy dressed in a tie for work who was just running up the street to get gas in his wife's car before heading to work at 4:30.

I don't know how fast I was going. I put the car in 5th, and had the accelerator down. I told the cop as much. After the longest 20 minutes of running my info and letting me sweat, he came back over, told me very sternly to pay attention, and let me go. I think the fact that I had a completely clean record, was clearly dressed for work, and was pulled over while pulling into the gas station all bolstered my claim.

Edited to add, I have not traveled this fast over the speed limit since then. Under any circumstance. In fact after that, I am hesitant to do more than 10 over when the flow of traffic is faster than 10 over.

I know that in TX, the state troopers will usually drive at a very constant speed, usually around 60 on state highways, to make clocking oncoming cars more accurate. Bottom line, it's enough for me to know that they can do it, and that their readings will probably hold up in court.

I aim to be the second fastest on the road. One thing I always do when I see a cop, if I'm speeding, is slow down. I used think, and I know a lot of folks still do, that by slowing down when you see a cop it's just admitting you were doing something wrong. But after talking to a state trooper, I now know that by not slowing down you're essentially asking to be pulled over because they think you're either not paying attention or, worse, flaunting your speeding in their face. In other words, slowing down is saying, "oops, my bad, I won't do it again."

Yep. The other night, on the way back from the Depeche Mode show in Phoenix, I was doing 81 (in a 75) with the cruise control on in the middle lane of a three lane stretch of highway (as I was regularly passing semi's and others on the right). A car comes up behind me, and rides pretty close to me, and there is a COMPLETELY open lane to my left. I turned off CC and moved to the right, and a DPS cruiser passes me. About 10 seconds after he passed me, I pulled back out, set the CC for 81 again and the cop slowed down, noticeably, to 75, stayed there for about 15 seconds, and then started to accelerate away. I set my CC to 77 and got the message loud and clear.

I was very happy I was in a calm and drive and let drive mood and pulled over when someone had a lane to get past me in, I believe he was attempting to bait me to speed and I didn't take it. And then he wanted to make sure that he knew that I knew that I was going over.

There are only a few states, like Washington, which actually allow you in law to exceed the speed limit for the purposes of passing another vehicle. c.f. RCW 46.61.425

EDIT: Provided said moron is going less than the legal maximum speed. On a two lane road.

Most places are technically "Thou shalt not exceed this numerical limit for any reason whatsoever, and under any circumstances, including passing."
